The Haryana captain fulfilled her dream by serving the country for ten years.

As the first woman from her community to join in the Indian Army, Captain Dr. Sunaina Singh swapped expectations for her goals.

The bravery and tenacity of Captain Dr. Sunaina Singh are demonstrated by her rise from a small Haryana village to a prestigious position in the Indian Army and beyond. She disproved the conventional wisdom that “Army jobs don’t suit girls.”

But for ten years, she recalls, “I lived my dream in the army.” People expected her to become a teacher because she comes from a family of teachers and both of her parents were teachers.

But Sunaina had a different idea, one that was influenced by her independence fighter father, or dadu. She felt a strong feeling of obligation and a desire to serve the country after hearing his words, “Desh ke liye kuch karna” (Do something for the country).

She was the sole girl in her community to enlist in the Indian Army in 2010. She had to overcome a number of mental and physical obstacles, but each one made her stronger. She continued her grandfather’s legacy by proudly donning the outfit.

Because they both had a strong desire to serve the country, she also met her life partner in the army. Together, they are instilling in their son the same sense of responsibility and patriotism.

Her military service did not, however, mark the end of her quest. As a mentor for the Services Selection Board (SSB), she started mentoring more than a thousand young women, assisting them in breaking down barriers and leaving their own lasting impact.

Building others as you go is what it means to be truly strong. Serving the country, in her opinion, is about changing the world in whichever way you can, not just wearing a uniform.

In order to assist kids follow their aspirations, Sunaina currently conducts workshops and inspirational speeches in schools and universities. As a trainer, sports psychologist, life coach, army officer, and SSB mentor, her story is noteworthy because she is dedicated to helping others reach their full potential.
